Our Mission
At Service Dogs UK, our mission is to support Veterans from the Armed Forces and Emergency Services who are living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)—through the life-changing power of partnering with a specially trained rescue dog.
Why We Exist
PTSD is a serious and often misunderstood mental health condition that can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed traumatic events. For those who have served in the Armed Forces or Emergency Services, exposure to trauma can be part of daily life—whether in conflict zones, responding to disasters, or dealing with life-threatening situations on the front line.
While their roles are different, both military and emergency service personnel often carry the hidden wounds of trauma long after their service ends. PTSD can lead to flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, isolation, and suicidal thoughts. It can affect relationships, work, and the ability to live independently.
At Service Dogs UK, we recognise the unique challenges Veterans face in both environments. That is why we offer a life-changing, practical and emotional support system through the power of the human-canine bond.

What We Do
We pair carefully selected rescue dogs with Veterans diagnosed with PTSD and guide them through a structured, positive training programme—together. Our approach is built on trust, mutual respect, and empowerment. Each Veteran is an active part of their dog’s training, helping to form a deep bond that becomes the foundation of their journey together. Our work provides:
- Emotional support and stability through the calming presence of a trained dog
- Increased mental wellbeing, reducing symptoms of anxiety and hypervigilance
- Increased confidence in public spaces and social settings, reducing isolation
- Structure and routine that helps improve daily functioning and independence
- A non-judgemental companion who is always there, bringing calm and security
An independent evaluation of our work was conducted in partnership with the Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) OneWelfare Research Group, led by Dr. Nieky van Veggel and Zoe Thomson MSc. The findings showed significant improvements in Veterans’ confidence, emotional wellbeing, social connection, and quality of life—demonstrating the real and lasting impact of these unique partnerships.
Our Commitment
We are committed to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health in the Armed Forces and Emergency Services communities. We believe asking for help is a sign of strength—and we’re here to support each Veteran and their dog, every step of the way.
Many of our Veterans tell us their dog has helped them feel hopeful again—for some, it’s the first time in years. By combining professional training, compassionate support, and the healing bond between human and dog, we are building brighter futures.
Together, we are changing lives—two at a time.
